Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) hurled a six-hitter and sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) hit a three-run home run to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 5-4 win in the first game of an America East Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. Maine won game two, 13-3, to earn a split of the day's doubleheader and the four-game series. Stony Brook is now 19-21 overall and 8-6 in the America East.
Stony Brook jumped to an early lead in game one, scoring two runs in the first. Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) drove in the first run with an RBI double and senior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.) then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.
Cantwell drilled his first home run of the season to left in the fourth to give the Seawolves a 5-0 lead. Cantwell also recorded a hit in the second game and now has a 15-game hitting streak.
Maine climbed within 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double from Ian Leisenheimer. The Black Bears then drew within 5-4 with two runs in the fifth.
But Johnson retired the Black Bears in order in both the sixth and seventh to secure the victory for the Seawolves. Johnson struck out five as he earned his team-high sixth victory of the season.
Maine grabbed the early lead in game two, scoring three runs in the second. Matt Howard and Michael Francisco each had RBI singles in the inning. Maine added a run in the third on a Tyler Patzalek sacrifice fly and then made it 5-0 in the fourth on a home run from Myckie Lugbauer.
The Black Bears scored three runs in the fifth highlighted by a Lugbauer two-run single to make it 8-0. The Seawolves got on the board in the sixth on a run-scoring double from sophomore Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and an RBI groundout from junior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.).
But Maine put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Joey Martin capped the inning with a three-run home run. Keith Bilodeau earned the win for Maine, allowing two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Marist. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
