Vestal, N.Y. -
Junior Brijette Martin (New York, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, but it wasn't enough as the Stony Brook University softball team fell to Binghamton, 5-4, on Sunday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Seawolves have clinched a spot in the four-team America East Championship. Stony Brook is now 25-18-1 (8-6 America East).
Binghamton jumped out to an early lead on a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the first. The Bearcats then tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their advantage to 5-0.
Stony Brook would use a two-out rally in the top of the third to narrow the deficit to just two. Following a double by senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.), Martin recorded her first hit of the game, an RBI single to center. An error by Binghamton's first baseman extended the inning, and freshman Shannon O'Shea (Lake Worth, Fla.) made the Bearcats pay for it with a two-RBI double.
Neither team managed much offensively from there on, until the top of the seventh inning when freshman Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) recorded a pinch-hit double to center. A single by Martin would move her to third and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bernadette Tenuto (Aubudon, N.J.) would pull the Seawolves within one at 5-4. Binghamton's Kristen Emerling would get the next batter to fly out, however, to end the game.
Stony Brook's next game will be on Wednesday when it hosts a doubleheader against Seton Hall.
