Baseball Cruises To Doubleheader Sweep of UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - Stony Brook University's baseball team combined for 43 runs and 45 hits on its way to a doubleheader sweep of the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday afternoon at Baseball Factory Field. The Seawolves used a 16-run second inning to defeat the Retrievers 26-6 in game two. Sophomore Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) hurled a four-hit shutout to lead SBU to a 17-0 win in game one. Stony Brook is now 21-22 overall and 10-6 in the America East.

Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) went 4-for-6 with five RBI in the game two rout while sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) as well as freshmen William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) and Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) each drove in four runs. Cantwell now has a 17-game hitting streak. Tropeano struck out 11 in his complete game effort, scattering four singles over 7.0 innings.

SBU put game two away quickly, striking for the 16 runs in the second inning. The Seawolves sent 21 men to the plate in the inning and recorded 16 hits. Cantwell and Carmona each drove in four runs in the frame while Nivins added a three-run home run.

UMBC scored three in the bottom of the inning but SBU answered with four runs in the third highlighted by a two-run single from senior Robert Dyer (Selden, N.Y.). Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) picked up his team-high seventh win in game two, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.

Stony Brook coasted in game one as well, score in a run in the second on a run-scoring single from junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) before adding three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Nivins, freshman Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) and senior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y.) each had a run-scoring hit in the third.

The Seawolves put the game away with six runs in the fourth. Stephan drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI double. He later scored on a wild pitch. Marshall drove in the final run of the inning with a run-scoring double.

SBU added five runs in the fifth highlighted by two-run singles from freshmen John Adornetto (Commack, N.Y.) and Vincent Caesar (Massapequa, N.Y.). Tropeano, meanwhile, struck out six over the first three innings on his way to his team-best fifth complete game.

Stony Brook had seven batters record multiple hits in game one. Nivins led the way with three hits and three RBI.

The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
