June 15, 2010

Cambridge, Mass. - Senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) and sophomore Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) of the Stony Brook University baseball team have been named to the America East All-Academic team, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

An All-America East second-team selection, Stephan hit .325 and led the team in home runs (10) and RBI (51). He saved his best for conference play as he led the league in doubles (13) and RBI (35), and ranked fourth in batting average (.413). An All-Academic selection for the third time, Stephan posted a 3.96 GPA in Liberal Studies as a graduate student.

Johnson went 10-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 14 starts, earning a spot on the All-America East first team. He went 6-1 with a 2.44 ERA during conference play and his 10 victories are a Stony Brook single-season record.

He also earned a spot on the All-Myrtle Beach Regional Tournament Team after allowing just two runs in 8.0 innings to lead the Seawolves to their first ever Division I NCAA Tournament win, a 6-2 win over North Carolina State. Johnson has a 3.72 GPA as a history major.

To be nominated for the All-Academic team, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions. In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
