Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) and senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) combined for 36 kills but the Brown Bears rallied from a two sets to one deficit to defeat the Stony Brook University volleyball team, 3-2, (22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9) on Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Stony Brook falls to 4-11 with the loss while Brown improves to 6-6.
Nelson totaled a game-high 19 kills while Headen added 17 on a hitting percentage of .314. Senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) tallied a game-high 21 digs for the Seawolves. Kathryn Glickman paced Brown with 14 kills.
Set one was close most of the way with Stony Brook taking its largest lead of the game, 22-15, on a kill from sophomore Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.). Brown closed to within 24-22 before a block from Headen gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
Brown jumped to a 17-11 advantage in set two but the Seawolves scored seven of the next 10 points to make it 20-18. A Brown attack error cut the Bears lead to 24-23 but a Megan Toman kill evened the match at one. Stony Brook came out strong in set three, grabbing a 6-2 lead.
The Bears made it 10-9 before the Seawolves went on a 9-3 run to take 19-12 lead. Brown got no closer than four the rest of the way as the Seawolves took a 2-1 lead. Stony Brook hit .407 in the third set.
The Seawolves jumped to an 8-7 lead in set four but Brown tied it at eight on a Toman kill and then took the lead for good on a Headen attack error. The Bears eventually expanded their lead to 21-14 before going on to the 25-19 victory.
Brown took control of the deciding set early, scoring six of the first seven points. Stony Brook closed its deficit to 7-4 on a kill from Gibbs but the Bears scored two straight points to force a Stony Brook timeout.
The Bears eventually took a 14-7 advantage before a kill and an ace from Strenger made it 14-9. But Katrina Post answered with kill to give the Bears the comeback victory.
The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday, hosting LIU at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
