Men's hoops hustles to 67-53 win over Columbia

Nov. 22, 2011

Final Stats

Sophomore Dave Coley (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and the Stony Brook men's basketball team outrebounded Columbia 45-28 and never trailed as the Seawolves topped the Lions, 67-53, Tuesday night at Pritchard Gymnasium.

The Seawolves evened their season record to 2-2 while also keeping Columbia winless (0-4).

"We played Stony Brook defense tonight," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "They had a hard time scoring all night. And we got to the free throw line and got our rebounds. It was nice to get back to doing what we're supposed to be doing."

Although the team was outshot by the Lions (41% to 36%), Stony Brook did its damage on the offensive glass and at the free throw line. The Seawolves had 21 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second chance points. In addition, SBU was 20-for-26 (77%) from the free throw line.

Stony Brook took control of the game from the get-go and never trailed, holding Columbia scoreless for the game's first six minutes. The Seawolves were up 6-2 when three-pointers from junior Ron Bracey (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior Bryan Dougher (Scotch Plains, N.J.) made it 12-2 with 11:36 to play in the first half.

The Seawolves extended that lead to 14 points, 23-9, with an 8-0 run that was capped by sophomore Anthony Jackson (Columbus, Ohio), who bombed a three-pointer at 5:14 after Dougher hit a teardrop floater a minute earlier.

Stony Brook went into halftime up 12, 32-20, and Coley immediately made it 14 with a tip-in of his own miss. The team then extended its lead to 18, largest of the night, at 14:05 when junior Marcus Rouse (Upper Marlboro, Md.) hit a jumper.

Columbia used the three-pointer to get back into contest. Alex Rosenberg, Chris Crockett and Noah Springwater all drained three-pointers between 12:31 and 10:30 to cut the deficit to eight, 48-40.

Brian Barbour, who had a game-high 23 points, connected on a three with 7:32 remaining, but that was as close as Columbia would get. Junior Leonard Hayes (Voorhees, N.J.) answered the Barbour three immediately on a pass from Coley to put the lead back up to 10, and then senior Dallis Joyner (Norfolk, Va.) took the wind out of Columbia's sails with a big layup underneath the basket at 3:54 to make it a 13-point game. Stony Brook closed out the game by making nine of 10 shots from the free throw line in the final minute.

In addition to Coley's 12, Dougher finished with 11 points. Joyner had nine points. Junior Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) had nine points and team-best eight rebounds.

Stony Brook will now head to the Midwest for the second time this season as the Seawolves will play at Northwestern Friday at 1 p.m., Eastern. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Digital Network.
