Scouting the Opposition:
•Bucknell Bison (1-4)
The Seawolves will open the 2011 season at the Longwood Spring Classic in Farmville, Va. on Saturday against Bucknell. The Bison have already played five games entering this weekend, having dropped four of five contests at the Coastal Carolina Kickin' Chicken Classic last weekend. Bucknell defeated James Madison in their opener, before falling to Coastal Carolina (twice), St. Joseph's and James Madison. Sophomore Alex MacLean has started three games on the mound and has posted a 1-2 record with a 1.84 ERA.
•Longwood Lancers (4-0)
The Spring Classic will be Longwood's second tournament as a host already this season. Last weekend, Longwood hosted the Lancer Leadoff tournament and swept the opposition in dominant fashion. In beating IUPUI (twice), Army and Quinnipiac, Longwood outscored its opponents by a 30-7 margin and did not allow more than three runs in any game. Briana Wells owns a 3-0 record on the mound and has posted a 2.10 ERA. Brooke Short has powered the offense with four homeruns and 10 RBI, while hitting at an impressive .533 clip.
•Quinnipiac Bobcats (1-3)
The Bobcats also participated in the Lancer Leadoff tournament and split two games with Army, despite losing to IUPUI and Longwood. Jordan Paolucci hit a walk-off homerun to sink Army in the bottom of the seventh for Quinnipiac's lone victory. Jacqueline Ristow has been the Bobcats' most dangerous plate presence so far, hitting .364 with two RBI.
Early Returns:
The Seawolves own a 10-6 all-time record in season-openers under head coach Megan Bryant. Stony Brook has won three consecutive season-openers since falling to Delaware State in 2007. Last season, the Seawolves' bats exploded in a 14-0 rout of Toledo at the Charlotte Fast Pitch Classic on Feb. 19. Current junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) batted in five runs in a 2-for-2 effort at the plate.
Series Notes:
Against the three opponents Stony Brook will be facing this weekend, the Seawolves own a combined record of 6-9. Stony Brook is 6-5 against Quinnipiac, with its most recent win coming last year (1-0). The Seawolves will be looking for their first-ever victory over Longwood after dropping four previous meetings, including a 7-2 decision in 2010. The Seawolves have never faced Bucknell in the past.
