Baseball drops series finale to Florida Atlantic, 12-4

Boca Raton, Fla. - Junior Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) drove in two runs but the Florida Atlantic Owls used a five-run third to rally from early 4-1 deficit and defeat the Stony Brook University baseball team, 12-4, in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday at FAU Stadium.

Junior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) each had two hits for the Seawolves, who won the first two games of the series. Andy Mee and Joey Burkhalter drove in four runs apiece to lead the Owls.

Stony Brook (2-1) jumped to an early 3-0 lead, scoring three runs in the second on an Intagliata two-run single and a Cantwell RBI single. FAU got a run back in the bottom of the inning but SBU answered with a run in the third on a two-out RBI single from freshman Joshua Mason (Woodland Hills, Calif.).

But FAU (5-3) erupted for five runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a three-run double from Burkhalter. The Owls pushed their lead to 8-4 in the fourth on a two-run home run from Mee.

Florida Atlantic added four runs in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. Paul Davis (2-0) pitched 6.0 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Owls.

Sophomore Adam Brown (Melville, N.Y.) took the loss for Stony Brook, allowing six runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Each team finished the game with nine hits.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, traveling to take on No. 18 North Carolina for the beginning of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
