South Orange, N.J. -
Junior right-hander Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) struck out 10 in 7.0 innings and the Stony Brook University baseball team scored seven runs in the fourth on their way to a 13-2 victory over the Fordham Rams on Saturday at Owen T. Carroll Field in the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament.
Joe DiRocco hurled a three-hit shutout to lead Seton Hall to a 2-0 victory over the Seawolves in the second game of the day. Junior right-hander Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) took the loss despite allowing just two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. The loss snapped an eight-game Stony Brook winning streak.
SBU (10-5) jumped to an early lead against Fordham as sophomore Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) doubled to lead off the second and then came around to score on an RBI groundout from sophomore Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario).
The Seawolves tacked on a run in the third before Fordham got on the board in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Joe Russo. But Stony Brook erupted for seven runs in the fourth to put the game away.
SBU strung together seven straight hits to start the inning and sent 10 men to the plate in the frame. Nivins drove in the first two runs of the inning with a two-run double while freshmen Joshua Mason (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each added RBI singles.
Tropeano (3-1), meanwhile, cruised as he gave up just five hits in his 7.0 innings. Nivins led SBU with two hits and four RBI while Tissenbaum and senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) added three hits apiece. Stony Brook finished with 18 hits.
The second game of day between the Seawolves and Pirates turned into a pitcher's duel as the teams combined for just two hits over the first 5.0 innings. SBU threatened in their half of the fifth as Mason tripled with two outs. But DiRocco struck out Courtney looking to end the threat.
Seton Hall jumped on top in the sixth as A.J. Rusbarsky led off the inning with a single and scored one out later on a Ryan Sullivan RBI double. The Pirate tacked on a run in the seventh on a run-scoring single from Sean Gusrang.
SBU put runners on first and second with two outs in the eight but DiRocco got senior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) to fly out to center to end the inning. DiRocco then pitched around a Marino single in ninth to secure the victory for Seton Hall.
The Seawolves will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to take on the same Fordham squad. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
