Baseball rolls to 11-0 victory over Army

March 28, 2011

Box Score

West Point, N.Y. - Junior Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) and freshman Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) combined on a four-hit shutout and senior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) drove in four runs as the Stony Brook University baseball team defeated the Army Black Knights, 11-0, on Monday afternoon.

Johnson (3-2) allowed four hits in 6.0 innings, striking out four while walking one. Vanderka did not allow a base runner in his 3.0 innings for the Seawolves, who have not allowed an earned run over the last 28.0 innings. Stony Brook (13-5) has won three straight and 11 of its last 12.

Marshall had two hits in five at-bats and is 5-for-10 over the last three games. Freshman Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored while sophomores Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) and Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) added two hits each.

Army threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with no outs. But Clint Moore followed with a grounder back to Johnson, who threw home for the first out. Johnson then got J.T. Watkins to ground into an inning ending double play to get out of the jam.

The Seawolves jumped on top with three runs in the fifth. Courtney drove in the first run with an RBI single before Marshall made it 3-0 with a two-run single down the left field line.

The Black Knights opened the sixth with back-to-back singles. But Johnson once again navigated out of trouble as he got Shaun Wixted to fly out to center before inducing another ground ball double play to end the inning.

Stony Brook then put the game away with five runs in the seventh. Tissenbaum had the big hit in the inning, a two-run double to right field. Marshall added a two-run single in the eighth.

The Seawolves return to action this weekend, traveling to New York Tech for a four-game series.
