Softball drops 5-1 decision at LIU

April 14, 2011

Box Score

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Despite outhitting the Blackbirds by a 10-4 margin, the Stony Brook softball team fell to Long Island on Thursday evening by a score of 5-1 at LIU Field. Freshman Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) recorded her first-career multi-hit game and knocked in the Seawolves' lone run.

The Seawolves (12-19) drew first blood in the second when Schieferstein posted her first collegiate RBI with a single to right field, scoring freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.). Stony Brook followed with a pair of infield hits from junior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) and junior Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.), but could not get another run home in the frame.

Long Island (11-27) equalized in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Karina Cervantes. Starter Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) was then able to work out of the jam with a ground-out and a fly-out to quell the threat.

In the fifth, freshman Alexandra Clark (Warsaw, Va.) relieved Matthes, but immediately had to work out of danger as the leadoff hitter reached on catcher's interference. After a pair of sacrifice plays and an infield single, the Blackbirds took the lead, 2-1, and never looked back.

Long Island tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth to pad the scoreline to 5-1. Meanwhile, the Seawolves could not add to their run total, despite getting runners on base in every inning.

In addition to Schieferstein, junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J) and Hawley added two-hit efforts on the day.

Stony Brook will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it opens a three-game series at Hartford.
