Game Two Box Score
West Hartford, Conn. - Sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) scattered four hits over seven innings, while striking out seven to lead the Stony Brook softball team to a 2-1 win in game two of a doubleheader at Hartford on Saturday. The Hawks prevailed in the first game by a 5-3 count.
With the split, the Seawolves stand at 13-20 overall and 3-8 in America East play, while Hartford sits at 4-26 overall and 1-7 in conference action.
The Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game, before Stony Brook initiated a late rally that fell just short. The Seawolves scored three runs in the top of the seventh and left the bases loaded, before the hosts got out of the jam to pick up their first conference win. Junior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) knocked in the first run on a one-out triple, and then came around to score on an RBI groundout by junior Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.). Junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) then extended the game with a two-out single, and scored shortly after on an RBI double by junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.).
In the second game, Harftord again drew first blood with a run in the fourth. But Stony Brook answered right back with two in the fifth to take over the lead. Karath led off with another triple and then scored when Maloney ripped yet another triple into right field. Chain then helped her own cause with an RBI double to plate the eventual winning run.
The Seawolves outhit the Hawks in both games and have now outhit their opponents in six straight contests dating back to April 7 against Manhattan. Stony Brook is 3-3 over that span.
The Seawolves will vie for the series win on Sunday when they take on the Hawks for the third and final time at 12 p.m.
