Game One Box Score
Game Two Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team came up empty on Thursday against Iona, losing both games of a doubleheader by scores of 7-0 and 5-1 at University Field.
The Seawolves (14-23) managed seven hits on the day against Iona's tough pitching, including three from junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.). Tenuto had one of two Stony Brook hits in game one, and then followed with a 2-for-3 effort in game two.
The Gaels (17-16) used 10 hits to jump on the Seawolves in the opening game. Iona scored three runs in the third and added to its cushion with runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh. Stony Brook, meanwhile, could only muster four baserunners off starter Sarah Jackson and reliever Alyssa Maiese. In addition to Tenuto, junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) was the only other Seawolf to record a hit in the game.
In the second game, the Seawolves got off to a good start and took the lead in the first inning. After a pair of one-out singles, junior Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.) came around to score after a throwing error by the Iona shortstop.
Iona answered right back, however, plating a run on two hits in the top of the second, before charging ahead for good with a run in the top of the third. The Gaels then tacked on three more in the fifth to take a 5-1 advantage.
Stony Brook had multiple chances in the last of the seventh when it loaded the bases with no outs, but could not push any runs across. Tenuto slapped the ball to the pitcher Maiese, who alertly threw home to get the force for the first out. Sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) then hit back to the pitcher again, but this time the Gaels were able to turn the 1-2-3 double play, getting the out at home and then at first.
The Seawolves will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Rider for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
