April 29, 2011

LIVE STATS: Game One | Game Two | Game Three

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Winners of three straight, the Stony Brook softball team will wrap up the home portion of the schedule this weekend against Binghamton. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then wrap up the weekend with a single game Sunday, before which the Seawolves will honor their lone senior, Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.).

Binghamton
The Bearcats (20-15, 8-3 AE) feature a high-powered offense led by the conference’s top two RBI producers, Jessica Phillips and Deannie Plemon. Phillips leads the America East with 13 home runs and 40 RBI, while batting  at a league-best .495 clip. Plemon owns 39 RBI and nine homers to go along with a .294 batting average. In the circle, Kate Price leads the conference with a 1.24 ERA in 18 appearances. The Bearcats currently sit third in the America East standings with an 8-3 conference record, while the Seawolves are sixth at 3-9. Stony Brook holds a 32-18 all-time record against the Bearcats dating back to 1982.

Last Time Out
The Seawolves swept Quinnipiac on Wednesday by scores of 2-0 and 4-3. Stony Brook’s pitching staff of Matthes, sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) and freshman Alex Clark (Warsaw, Va.) limited the Bobcats to just seven hits in two games. Matthes was the story in the opener, striking out eight in a complete-game effort. In game two, Clark pitched into the eighth inning, before giving way to Chain, who got the Seawolves out of a jam and enabled the offense to win the game in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.) walk-off single.

Senior Day
On Sunday, the Seawolves will honor Matthes, the team’s lone senior, who will be pitching in her final home game. Heading into the weekend, Matthes has 22 career wins, which is the sixth-most all-time at Stony Brook. Matthes’ 277 career strikeouts are the fifth-most in program history, while her 371 innings pitched rank sixth in the record books.
