Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team dropped its third game of the weekend on Sunday, falling 6-1 to UMBC at University Field. The defeat drops the Seawolves' record to 9-16 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
For the third straight game, the Retrievers (17-12, 3-3 AE) punished the Seawolves in the first inning as Ashley Scroggin ripped a two-run homer to center to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. UMBC tacked on two more in the fourth to go up 4-0, but Stony Brook answered back with a run of its own to cut the deficit to three. A pair of UMBC errors allowed junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) to trot home and bring the score to 4-1.
The Retrievers again had a response, however, and extended their advantage to 6-1 courtesy of an error and a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth.
Stony Brook mustered five hits on the afternoon, including a double from sophomore Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.). Junior Alyssa Hawley went 1-for-4 and swiped two bases to bring her team-best total to seven for the season.
The Seawolves will wrap up their homestand on Thursday, April 7 with a non-conference doubleheader against Manhattan.
