Baseball falls to Iona, 10-4

Yaphank, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's baseball team pounded out 10 hits but the Iona Gaels rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Seawolves, 10-4, in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. Stony Brook falls to 16-7 with the loss.

Matt Marley allowed four runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings to earn the win for Iona. Sophomore Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) led the Seawolves with two hits and two RBI.

The Seawolves jumped to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the first. Senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) drove in the first run with an RBI single before Nivins followed with a two-run double.

But Iona scored a run in the second and added two in the third to tie the game. The Gaels then took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth highlighted by a two-run home run from Chris Burke.

Iona tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a Kyle Charron home run and then scored two runs in the seventh to make it 10-3. Freshman Joshua Mason (Woodland Hills, Calif.) hit his first career home run in the seventh, a solo shot to left.

The Seawolves open America East play this weekend, hosting Maine for a four-game series. Saturday's doubleheader will be played at Dowling College while Sunday's doubleheader will be played at Adelphi University. First pitch on both days is set for 1 p.m.
