Game Two Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team nailed down a split against Manhattan on Thursday, defeating the Jaspers, 5-3, in game one, before falling in the nightcap, 6-4. Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) picked up the win in game one, while junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) batted 5/7 on the day with three RBI.

Despite walking 12 batters, Matthes allowed only one hit to pick up her seventh victory of the season. Manhattan's lone hit came with two outs in the seventh in a 5-2 game when Kelly Murray hit an infield single to short, allowing a run to score. However, Tenuto alertly threw home as a second Manhattan runner attempted to score, and gunned the runner down at the plate to end the game 5-3 in the Seawolves' favor.

Tenuto sparked the offense into motion as well with a 3-for-4 effort in game one, inlcuding two doubles. Sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) also enjoyed a productive game at the dish, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. In total, Stony Brook pounded out eight hits and stole three bases (Alyssa Hawley, Jessica Combs, Suzanne Karath) in the game as the hosts halted a four-game slide with the win.

In the second game, Stony Brook jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Chain lined a double down the left field line to score Tenuto and Hawley. Manhattan bounced back in a big way, however, plating five runs --three unearned-- in the third to go on top for good. Chain again doubled home a run in the bottom of the inning to pull the team within 5-3, but Manhattan answered with a run of its own in the fifth to go back ahead by three.

Tenuto capped her stellar offensive day with a solo home run, her third of the season, in the sixth to make it 6-4. Manhattan shut the door from there and held on for its 11th victory (11-15) of the 2011 campaign. Stony Brook fell to 10-17 with the game two defeat.

Chain added another 2-for-3 effort in game two, knocking in three runs, while pitching 4.1 innings and allowing only one run.

Stony Brook will hit the road this weekend for a pivotal three-game series against conference-foe Maine starting on Saturday at 1 p.m.
