Junior Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) hurled a two-hitter to lead the Stony Brook baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Maine in the opener of a four-game series on Saturday at Golden Lions Field. Game 2 was suspended due to darkness after 10 innings with the score tied, 7-7.
The teams will complete the suspended game on Sunday at Adelphi University beginning at 12 p.m. Following the completion of that game, the teams will play Sunday's scheduled doubleheader.
Tropeano (6-1) allowed just one run in the seven-inning game and struck out five. Senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and sophomore Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) each had a hit and two RBI to lead the Stony Brook offense.
SBU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on a RBI single from junior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.). The Seawolves added three in the fourth highlighted by a two-run triple from Marino.
Maine put runners on first and third with nobody out in the fifth. But Tropeano got Justin Leisenheimer to ground into a double play. Tyler Patzalek came home to score on the play but Tropeano then retired Eric White on grounder to short to end the inning.
Stony Brook then put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jankowski had the big hit in the inning, a two-out two-run single. Jeff Gibbs allowed six runs on four hits in 4.1 innings and took the loss for the Black Bears.
Maine jumped to leads of 3-1 and 4-3 in the second game. But the Seawolves took the lead in the seventh on run-scoring singles from Marino and Jankowski.
SBU tacked on two more runs in the eighth and took a 7-4 lead to the ninth. But the Black Bears struck for three runs in the ninth, tying the game on a two-run double from Mike Fransoso with one out. Sophomore reliever William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) then struck out Joey Martin and got Taylor Lewis to fly to center to get out of the jam.
Neither team had a runner reach base over the final inning and a half before the game was suspended following the 10th. Cantwell and Carmona led SBU with two hits apiece in the second game.
