Box Score

Brookhaven, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's baseball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped on Sunday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to the Binghamton Bearcats in the finale of a three-game set. Freshman right-hander Brandon McNitt (Chino Hills, Calif.) allowed three earned runs in a complete game effort.

Stony Brook (30-10, 11-2 AE) took two of three from the Bearcats in the weekend series and still lead the America East by two games. Sophomore Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) led the Stony Brook offense with three hits and an RBI.

McNitt (5-2) allowed 11 hits and walked two. Jay Lynch hurled a complete game for the Bearcats, striking out eight.

The Seawolves jumped on top with a run in the first as junior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) led off with a single and then scored when Tissenbaum's line drive got over the head of Binghamton centerfielder Bill Bereszniewicz.

But the Bearcats rallied for two runs in the second, one unearned, to take a 2-1 lead. Binghamton added a run in the sixth as Corey Taylor singled to open the inning, moved to third on a single from Peter Bregartner and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Thompson.

SBU got a run back in the bottom of the sixth as Tissenbaum doubled to lead off and then moved to third on a one-out single from sophomore Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario). Tissenbaum scored on a fielder's choice from sophomore Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.)

Jankowski then stole second and third before Lynch struck out freshman Joshua Mason (Woodland Hills, Calif.) to get out of the jam. Lynch retired the side in order in the seventh and the eighth and the Bearcats then tacked on a run in the ninth on a RBI double from Dave Ciocchi.

Jankowski doubled with one out in the bottom of the ninth but Lynch struck out freshmen Michael Hubbard (Northridge, Calif.) and Kevin Courtney (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to end the game. Bregartner led the Binghamton offense with three hits in four at-bats.

The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, traveling to take on Marist. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
