Albany, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team concluded the 2011 season on Sunday at Albany, falling by a score of 6-4. Juniors Lauren Maloney and Alyssa Hawley both went 4-for-4 on the day as the Seawolves closed out the campaign with a 20-29 overall record.
Albany (25-21, 14-4 America East) hit three home runs in the game, including two in the first inning to open up an early 5-0 lead. Stony Brook chiseled away at the deficit with two runs in the second as Maloney crushed a double that scored freshman Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) and freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.).
The Seawolves then struck again with two more runs in the sixth when Hawley poked a single into left-center to bring in Maloney and Schieferstein, making it 6-4. Stony Brook had a chance to tie the score in the seventh with runners at the corners and one out, but Albany pitcher Brittany MacFawn worked her way out of the jam to close out the game.
Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.), who was responsible for four earned runs, took the loss to finish out the season with a 13-18 record. Matthes struck out a career-best 163 batters in 2011, which is good for the sixth-highest single-season mark in Stony Brook history. Matthes' 13 wins were the 10th-most in a single season in program history as well.
Maloney's perfect day at the plate raised her average to .308 for the season, joining junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) as the only two players on the team to hit better than .300. Tenuto completed the season with a team-best 22 RBI, just one shy of her previous season record, and led the team in doubles (11), hits (50), batting average (.338) and tied for the team high with three home runs.
Overall, Stony Brook won at least 20 games for the 11th consecutive season, all of which have been under the direction of head coach Megan Bryant.
With the defeat on Sunday, the Seawolves finished sixth in the conference standings with a 5-13 America East record.
