Baseball sends 21 to summer ball

June 3, 2011

Stony Brook, N.Y. - After leading the Seawolves to the 2011 America East regular season title and a school record 42 wins, 21 members of the Stony Brook baseball team will scatter across the nation to hone their skills in various summer leagues. SBU finished 2011 with a 42-12 record; the third best winning percentage in the country and tied an America East record with 22 conference wins.

The Seawolves will send seven players to the prestigious Cape Cod League, which is known as one of the top summer leagues in the country. Arizona, Florida, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Stanford are the only teams in the nation that will send more players to the Cape than Stony Brook.

Last summer, junior right-hander Nick Tropeano (West Islip, N.Y.) had an outstanding season for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape League. Tropeano led the league wuith 44 strikeouts and pitched 6.2 innings of no-hit relief to lead the Kettleers to a 6-0 victory in the decisive third game of the Cape Cod League Championship series.

In addition to the Cape, the Seawolves will send players to nine other summer leagues including the Northwoods League and the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
