Volleyball falls to Bowling Green, 3-0

Lewisburg, Pa. - Stony Brook University's volleyball team dropped its opening match of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday, falling to the Bowling Green Falcons, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-23). The Seawolves complete play at the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday, taking on Coppin State at 10 a.m. and the host Bisons at 12 p.m.

Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the Seawolves (3-7) with eight kills. Sophomore Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) tallied four block assists and freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) had a team-high nine digs.

Bowling Green (10-0) took control early, scoring the first nine points of the opening set. The teams battled evenly from there but the Seawolves were unable to get closer than seven as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead.

Stony Brook trailed just 8-5 early in the second set following a kill from Nelson but the Falcons answered with a 13-3 run to push out to a 20-8 advantage. Bowling Green closed it out a few points later on a kill from Emily Kauth.

The Seawolves jumped to a 12-7 lead in the third set behind two aces from sophomore Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) and kills from Nelson and Slaughter. Bowling Green rallied to tie it at 16 and then took a 19-18 lead on a kill from Paige Penrod.

Stony Brook eventually tied things up at 23 on a Falcon attack error but Bowling Green forced SBU attack errors on the next two points to close out the set and the match. Danielle Tonyan led the Falcons with 11 kills.
