Series Preview: Stony Brook looks to keeps its perfect record intact this weekend, traveling to Greenville, N.C. to face East Carolina. The Seawolves opened the 2012 season by going 4-0 at the Colonel Round Robin last weekend.
Last time out: Junior James Campbell (Bridgeport, Conn.) allowed just one run on two hits in 7.0 innings as the Stony Brook baseball team completed a perfect opening weekend at the Colonel Round Robin with a 4-1 victory over host Nicholls State on Sunday afternoon. Campbell struck out a career-high seven and shut the Colonels over his final 6.0 innings over allowing a run in the first. Sophomore Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched a perfect eight and ninth to pick up the save. The Seawolves (4-0) piled up 12 hits including two each from senior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.), juniors Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) and Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman Kevin Krause (Staten Island, N.Y.).
Seawolves News & Notes: Stony Brook moved up two spots to No. 15 in this week's College Baseball Daily Mid-Major Top 25 ... this will be Stony Brook's fifth ever meeting with East Carolina ... the Seawolves fell to ECU, 8-2, at the 2004 Kingston Regional and were then swept by the Pirates in a three-game series during the 2006 season ... the Seawolves pitching staff posted an ERA of 2.00 lastweekend and allowed just 25 hits in 36.0 innings ... senior Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) allowed just two hits in 8.0 shutout innings in Stony Brook's 6-0 win over Alabama State on Saturday ... Stecko-Haley was named America East Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday ... sophomore Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) pitched 3.0 shutout innings in relief on Friday against Alabama State to earn the win ... he then tossed 2.0 perfect innings against Nicholls State on Sunday to earn the save ... junior Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) hit .400 with five runs scored and three steals for the weekend
Scouting East Carolina: The Pirates are receiving votes in the ESPN/USA Today poll and are ranked No. 20 in Perfect Game USA's Top 25. ECU returns 22 letterwinners including eight position starters from last year's squad that went 41-21 and advanced to the Charlottesville Regional. Southpaw Kevin Brandt will make the Friday start for ECU. He and catcher Zach Wright were teammates of Travis Jankowski and Pat Cantwell with the Bourne Braves this summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Brandt is 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in 13.2 innings this season. Senior infielder Tim Younger is hitting .550 (11-for-20) to lead the ECU offense.
