Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team battled Big 12 foe Texas Tech in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, but fell by scores of 4-1 and 6-3 at University Field.
In the first game, Seawolves' starter Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) tossed a complete game and did not allow an earned run, while striking out five in the process. Texas Tech (21-7) scored all four of its runs in the top of the fifth as a pair of Stony Brook errors prolonged the inning and allowed the visitors to take command of the game.
Stony Brook (10-6) scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth when senior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) hit a sac-fly to right field to bring in freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) to make it 1-0 Seawolves.
Texas Tech starter Brittany Talley went the distance in the first game, allowing just four hits, while striking out six to pick up her seventh win of the season.
In the second game, the Red Raiders struck for three in the first and two in the second to build a 5-0 advantage early on. The Seawolves fought right back, however, making it 5-2 in the bottom of the second when sophomore Nicole Schieferstein (Seaford, N.Y.) brought in sophomore Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) with an RBI single. As the throw came in from the outfield, Schieferstein took a wide turn around first in a bid to take an extra base. Texas Tech's third baseman Emily Bledsoe cut off the throw and quickly fired to second to retire Schieferstein, but the throw sailed into the outfield and allowed another runner, junior Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y.) to score as well.
The game remained 5-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Seawolves again chipped away at the scoreline. Pinch-hitter Nicole Hagerty (Sicklerville, N.J.) looped a two-out single into left to score senior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.), but the Seawolves could not get any closer as Texas Tech pitcher Cara Custer retired Combs to end the inning.
The Red Raiders added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to make it 6-3 on a Raven Richardson RBI double.
Sophomore Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) took the loss in the second game after allowing four runs (only one earned) in 1.1 innings. Junior Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) came on in relief and pitched effectively, allowing two runs in 5.2 innings, while striking out two.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday when they host a doubleheader against Holy Cross starting at 12 p.m.
