No. 4 Stony Brook Tops No. 6 Elon to Advance in CAA Tournament

ELON, N.C. - The No. 4 Seawolves live to play another day in the CAA Championships as they rebounded from a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Charleston with a 5-3 win over No. 6 Elon in the lower bracket of the double elimination tournament.

Stony Brook will now take on the lowest seeded loser from tomorrow's main bracket matchups, set to take place between No. 1 Hofstra and No. 5 Charleston, and No. 2 UNCW and No. 3 Campbell.

How It Happened (vs. Charleston)

  • Both teams got things started with the long ball in the first, with Charleston taking a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer run from Halle Cannon, before Ella Hayes cut the lead in half with a lead-off shot to left.
  • After a scoreless second, the Cougars increased their lead to 4-1 in the third after three straight two-out hits.
  • Aubrey Jepson entered out of the bullpen and got the final out of the third, before retiring the side in each of the next two innings. She would run into some trouble in the top of the sixth with two runners getting aboard, but she managed to escape the inning unscathed.
  • Though they ultimately left the inning with the bases loaded, the Cougars still tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 5-1 and hold it through the end of the seventh.

How It Happened (vs. Elon)

  • With two out in the bottom of the first, the Seawolves quickly loaded up the bases on a pair of walks and a single from Mia Vannelli, setting the stage for Naiah Ackerman who dumped a double into the gap to plate three.
  • The Phoenix would tack on a run in each of the next two innings to cut Stony Brook's lead down to 3-2, before tying it up in the top of the fifth.
  • The Seawolves soon retook the lead, though, as Ackerman came up with two outs and two on and blooped one to left to make it 4-3, followed by an infield single by Karri Pritchard to make it a two-run game.
  • With a new lead, Jepson came back out and tossed a scoreless top of the sixth. Then, with one on and one out in the seventh, a groundball ricocheted off of Vannelli's leg and right into the glove of Ackerman got the out at second and flipped it to first for the game-winning double play.

Stats and Notes

  • Hayes' lead-off homer was the first of her Seawolves career. She ends the day with 20 RBIs and 30 runs on the season.
  • Ackerman's game two double was the 25th of her career. Her four-RBI effort brought her career total to 96 and gave her 20 career multi-RBI games.
  • Jepson pitched 11.1 out of 14 innings today, striking out four and allowing four earned runs.
