March 21, 2012

Box Score

Fairfield, Conn. - The Stony Brook softball team swept its second consecutive series on Wednesday, knocking off Fairfield, 6-5 and 2-0, in Fairfield, Conn. Senior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) had five hits on the day and freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) had three, including a two-run home run in the second game.

Maloney went 3-for-4 in the opener and fell just a single shy of the cycle, registering a double in the first inning, a triple in the fifth and a solo homer in the sixth to go along with three runs.

Stony Brook (14-6) struck for two runs in the top of the first as Giosia knocked in senior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) with an RBI groundout, before senior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) plated Maloney with a bunt single.

Fairfield (10-12) got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Seawolves fought back with three more in the fifth. After a leadoff triple by Maloney, Giosia knocked the ball down the left field line for a double to make it 3-1. Then, after a double steal attempt resulted in an out at third, sophomore Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) stepped to the plate and belted her first homer of the year to make it 5-1.

The Stags responded with three runs of their own in the fifth to make it 5-4, and threatened to tie, but Seawolves' starter Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) induced a pop-up with a runner on third to end the threat.

Maloney's homer in the sixth stretched the advantage to 6-4, giving Cukrov just enough breathing room as the hosts plated a final run in the seventh to round out the scoring. Cukrov registered five strikeouts on the day en route to her sixth victory.

Giosia finished the first game 2-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with a walk.

Chain then pitched the second game and stymied the Stags' offense, scattering six hits and striking out three. Stony Brook's only runs came off the bat of Giosia, whose sixth-inning two-run shot accounting for all the scoring.

Stony Brook returns to action on Saturday when it opens a three-game series vs. America East foe Hartford at University Field. First pitch on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
