Cukrov fires fourth straight shutout as softball tops BU

March 31, 2012

Box Score

Boston, Mass. - Freshman Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) extended her shutout streak to 27 consecutive innings as the Stony Brook softball team blanked Boston University, 1-0, on Saturday to improve to 4-0 in conference play.

Cukrov allowed only one hit, a second inning single, and struck out six to pick up her fourth straight shutout. In 20 innings against America East opponents thus far, Cukrov owns a 3-0 record, a 0.00 ERA, 17 strikeouts and only nine hits.

Stony Brook (19-7) plated the lone run of the day in the top of the second inning. Senior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.), who went 3-for-3 in the game, singled to lead off the frame and moved to second after a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.). Sophomore Nicole Hagerty (Sicklerville, N.J.) then delivered a clutch single through the right side to bring Tenuto in from second and give Stony Brook the lead. Hagerty also finished the game 3-for-3 as the Seawolves outhit the Terriers by a 10-1 margin.

Boston University (19-10, 3-1 America East) threatened to tie in the bottom of the fifth after Jayme Mask stole two bases to advance to third with two outs. However, Cukrov induced an infield pop-up by Megan Volpano to end the threat.

The Terriers never mounted anything after the fifth as Cukrov retired the side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to close out the game.

Stony Brook's victory on Saturday was its first regular season win against BU since April 2009, nearly three years ago. In addition, the Seawolves have not started 4-0 in conference play since the same year when the team won its first five America East games and went on to win the regular season crown.

The second game of the day was rescheduled for Sunday due to impending weather in the Boston area. Sunday's twin-bill is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
