Washington, D.C. - The Stony Brook softball team concluded its weekend at the Colonial Classic with a resounding 12-0 victory over Army on Sunday in Washington, D.C. Sophomore Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) tossed five shutout innings, while the Seawolves' offense churned out 12 hits.
Stony Brook (5-3) finished with a 3-1 record at the tournament as the Seawolves' second game on Sunday against host George Washington was canceled due to weather.
The Seawolves jumped on the Black Knights early with three runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) singled to right to bring in senior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.), before senior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) brought in Giosia with another single. Tenuto then came around to score on a fielding error on a ball hit by sophomore Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.).
The game remained 3-0 in favor of the Seawolves until the bottom of the fourth, when Stony Brook exploded for nine runs to bring the match to an early conclusion. The Seawolves recorded 10 hits in the inning, including five doubles and also capitalized on a pair of errors by the Black Knights. Combs, junior Gina Bianculli (Oakdale, N.Y) and senior Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.) each had two hits in the frame as the Seawolves sent 14 batters to the plate and prompted two pitching changes.
Giosia, Tenuto, Combs, Bianculli and Hawley each went 2-for-3 in the game and combined to score nine of the team's 12 runs.
Lucido scatted six hits over five innings and gave up just one extra-base hit, a leadoff double in the second inning, as she improved to 2-0 on the season.
Winners of four of their last five games, the Seawolves will travel to Ft. Myers, Fla. next weekend for the LaQuinta Inn and Suites Spring Break Tournament hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
