Game One Box Score

Game Two Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team lost a pair of home games to Big East foe Rutgers on Tuesday, dropping the first game, 4-0, and the second game, 6-1, at University Field. Freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) went 5-for-5 on the day and knocked in the Seawolves' lone run of the afternoon in game two.

Giosia went 2-for-2 in the opener and 3-for-3 in the second game and accounted for five of Stony Brook's 14 hits on the day. The Seawolves (27-11) produced seven hits in each game, but had trouble sustaining offensive momentum against the Scarlet Knights' pitching staff of Alyssa Landrith and Noelle Sisco.

The first game of the day was a pitchers duel between a pair of freshmen: Landrith and Seawolves starter Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.). The game remained scoreless into the seventh inning, when Brittney Lindley hit a two-out grand-slam over the centerfield wall to put Rutgers up 4-0. Cukrov finished with seven strikeouts and allowed six hits, while Landrith whiffed two, but walked only one. The defeat snapped a 13-game winning streak for Cukrov and also ended Stony Brook's eight-game home winning streak overall.

Rutgers (21-22) took command early in the second game, plating two runs in each of the first two innings off Stony Brook starter Alexandra Clark (Warsaw, Va.). The Seawolves grabbed a run back in the fifth when Giosia drove a single into center field to score senior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.), who went 2-for-4 in the game.

The Scarlet Knights were not done at the plate, however, as the visitors tacked on two more runs in the sixth off reliever Christine Lucido (Melville, N.Y.) to push the advantage to 6-1. Lucido struck out three batters in 5.1 innings of work, while allowing four hits.

With her five-hit day, Giosia pushed her average to a team-high .383 on the season. Giosia also leads the team in home runs (6), RBI (36), total bases (73) and slugging percentage (.608), and has yet to commit an error in the field this season.

The Seawolves return to action Thursday for a home doubleheader against Bryant starting at 2 p.m.
