Softball rolls over LIU for sixth straight home win

April 3, 2012

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Freshman Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) threw her eighth shutout of the season and Stony Brook's one-through-four hitters went 10-for-16 at the plate as the Seawolves defeated LIU, 7-0, on Tuesday at University Field. The Seawolves have won six straight at home and four of their last five overall.

Cukrov was dominant all afternoon, striking out nine batters and allowing only four baserunners to pick up her 12th win and lower her ERA to 1.23. The freshman phenom has now won her last eight starts and has given up just six runs over that span.

The Seawolves (21-8) pounded out 12 hits and had runners on base in every inning. The first runs of the game came in the bottom of the third when senior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) singled in senior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) to make it 1-0. Long Island's left fielder mishandled Tenuto's hit, however, and freshman Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) took advantage, scoring from second to put the Seawolves up 2-0.

The hosts heaped on four more in the fourth, sending eight batters to the dish and capitalizing on four hits. Senior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) went opposite field to knock in freshman Lauren Kamachi (Surrey, British Columbia), before Giosia smashed a two-run double to center. Tenuto then rounded off the inning with another double to bring home Giosia to make it 6-0.

Maloney and Tenuto each doubled in the sixth to add another run as Tenuto claimed her third hit and third RBI of the game. Maloney and Karath each finished 2-for-4, while Giosia and Tenuto each went 3-for-4 as the top four hitters in the lineup pounded out 10 of the team's 12 hits and accounted for five runs and six RBI.

The Seawolves, who were ranked No. 23 in the latest Mid-Major Softball Poll, will return to action Thursday for a doubleheader at Manhattan at 2:30 p.m.
