Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University baseball team dropped the finale of a three-game series to the Binghamton Bearcats, 5-2, on Saturday at Joe Nathan Field. The Seawolves took two of three from the Bearcats in the weekend set which opened conference play.

Juniors William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.), Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto. Ontario) and Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) led Stony Brook (19-9, 2-1 AE) with two hits apiece. Sophomore right-hander Joshua Mason (Woodland Hills, Calif.) allowed just one run in 5.0 innings of relief work.

Binghamton (9-14, 1-2 AE) jumped to an early lead on a two-run home run from Jake Thomas in the first. The Seawolves got a run back in the third on an RBI groundout from senior Sal Intagliata (Franklin Square, N.Y.) but the Bearcats answered with two runs in the fourth to push their lead to 4-1.

Stony Brook loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth but Binghamton starter Jake Lambert got Nivins to ground into an inning ending double play.

The Seawolves got within 4-2 in the sixth as senior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) led off with a single and then scored on a Carmona double down the left field line. Jack Rogalla came on in relief of Lambert though and retired the next three batters as Binghamton hung on to its two-run lead.

The Bearcats then added an insurance run in the eighth on a Bill Bereszniewicz RBI single.

Stony Brook put runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth but Rogalla retired freshman Steven Goldstein on a grounder to second to end the inning.

Lee Sosa then pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the victory for Binghamton. Lambert earned the victory while senior Evan Stecko-Haley (Coral Springs, Fla.) took the loss for Stony Brook.

The Seawolves return to action on Tuesday, hosting Iona at Joe Nathan Field.
