Freshman outfielder Steven Goldstein (East Meadow, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook University baseball team has been named both America East Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Goldstein helped the Seawolves to a sweep of UMBC over the weekend that clinched the team's second straight America East regular season title.
Goldstein hit .818 (9-for-11) with seven RBI in the three-game sweep of the Retrievers. He went 3-for-4 with five RBI in the 21-8 victory on Saturday before collecting four hits and two RBI in the series finale on Sunday.
He is now hitting .371 with 27 RBI for the season including a .397 mark during conference play.
As a result of winning the regular season title, the Seawolves (39-11, 17-3 AE) will now host the 2012 America East Championships May 23-25 at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook has won 15 of their last 16 and 25 of their last 28 and are just one win from becoming the third team in America East history with back-to-back 40 wins seasons.
The Seawolves close the regular season this Friday and Saturday with a four-game series at Maine.
