Tyler Johnson named Academic All-America

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior right-hander Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America baseball team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Friday. Johnson earned a spot on the second team.

Named a Louisville Slugger third team All-American yesterday, Johnson went 9-1 with a 1.78 ERA in 12 starts and set the Stony Brook career record for wins earlier this season. Johnson recently graduated with his degree in History and posted a 3.71 GPA this year.

He is a two-time member of the America East All-Academic team and was selected as the America East Scholar Athlete in baseball in 2010.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution

Making its third NCAA tournament in the last five seasons, No. 25 Stony Brook opens the Coral Gables Regional against No. 23 Miami on Friday at 7 p.m.
