Box Score
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team lost a pair of close games to Binghamton on Saturday at University Field. The Bearcats prevailed, 3-2, in eight innings in the opener, before taking the second game by a score of 3-0.
Coach's Reaction
"I thought we pitched well and played good defense today, but the story of the day for us was leaving too many runners on base, particularly in scoring position. Both games were winnable for us."
--Head Coach Megan Bryant
Game One
In Saturday's opener, Binghamton (25-13, 12-2 America East) took a 2-0 lead into the seventh courtesy of two solo homers from Jessica Phillips and Taylor Chaffee. Down to its final out, Stony Brook (25-21, 7-7 America East) battled back to tie on a two-run single by junior Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.).
The tie was shortlived, however, as the Bearcats struck for the eventual game-winning run in the eighth on an opposite-field single by Chaffee.
Binghamton pitcher Demi Laney improved to 12-5 with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance. Sophomore Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) also pitched very well, but took the defeat, despite fanning eight batters in a complete-game effort.
Game Two
Binghamton then won the second game by a score of 3-0, once again coupling the long-ball with strong pitching. Tiffany McIntosh hit a two-run homer off Stony Brook starter Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) and pitcher Rhoda Marsteller tossed a complete-game, scattering six hits and striking out seven.
Sallen, who struck out six, fell to 6-7 with the loss.
Junior Olivia Mintun (Neoga, Ill.), sophomore Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and freshman Kellie Reynolds (Paso Robles, Calif.) each had two hits for Stony Brook.
