Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook head softball coach Megan Bryant is excited to announce her five-member 2015 recruiting class, as Lindsey Hughes (San Dimas, Calif.), Emily Acquaviva (New Hartford, N.Y.), Danni Kemp (Milford, Conn.), Katelyn Corr (Suffield, Conn.) and Irene Rivera (Sylmar, Calif) have signed to join the #Seawolves for the 2015-16 academic year. The group features a pitcher, two infielders and two outfielders.
"We are so excited that Lindsey, Emily, Danni, Katelyn, Irene and their families have joined our Seawolves' family," Bryant said. "This is a terrific class that will make its mark here at Stony Brook. We have added pitching, power, speed and athleticism with this group. All five players are committed to academic, athletic and personal success."
Hughes is a standout pitcher at San Dimas High School. As a junior she went 14-5 with a 1.34 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .162 batting average. The 2014 All-Valle Vista League selection plays travel ball for coach Valerie Van Kirk-Levier of the California Thunder Gold. Additionally, she sports a 4.2 GPA and was named a Scholar-Athlete.
"Lindsey is a great addition to our program and pitching staff," Bryant said. "She throws hard and has a tremendous work ethic. Lindsey loves to compete and is a smart player. She is an outstanding student and will be a perfect fit for Stony Brook, academically."
Acquaviva was an All-Central New York, all-conference and second team All-State selection as a junior at New Hartford High School, batting .499 with six home runs, 31 runs batted in and 25 stolen bases. A Scholar-Athlete, Acquaviva plays travel ball for the Tremors Gold and coach Brian Theleman.
"Emily has speed, good instincts, and can cover some ground in the OF. She also has good power potential at the plate. She is really competitive and always is striving to improve her game. Emily was attracted to Stony Brook for the outstanding combination of quality academics and athletics that we have here," Bryant remarked.
Kemp hit .446 last season for J.A. Foran High School en route to all-conference and first team All-State honors. In three seasons at Foran, she has collected more than 100 hits and 40 stolen bases. Kemp is a member of the Connecticut Charmers, coached by Neil Swanchak. "Danni is a five tool player with power to all fields," Bryant beamed.
"She is versatile defensively, can steal bases and is a tough competitor. Danni is a good all-around athlete who can beat you in a lot of ways. She will be an exciting player to watch here at Stony Brook."
Corr has showcased a big, power-hitting bat at Suffield High School. As a junior, she garnered All-State and All-Conference honors after hitting .575 with 9 homers and a slugging percentage of 1.050. She was also placed on the Connecticut Junior All-Select team. Corr also lettered in basketball and field hockey at Suffield, earning all-conference honors in field hockey. She is a teammate of Kemp on the Connecticut Charmers.
"Katelyn has all the qualities we are looking for in an outfielder- athleticism, speed, a good arm and an aggressive style of play. She has so much potential offensively and will be able to be a legitimate triple threat from the left side. Katelyn loves to play the game and it shows in her hustle and hard work,"Bryant said.
Rivera was a second team all-league selection at Granada Hills, batting .357 with six home runs. A polished defensive catcher, Rivera plays her travel ball for coaches John Ashley and Bob Creamer of Bownet Gold. "Irene is one of the best catchers to come out of California in her class, and is athletic and versatile enough to play first and third base for us," Bryant said.
"She understands the catching position and has all the tools- a terrific arm, blocks and frames well, makes her pitchers better and takes leadership on the field. Combined with her great power at the plate, we look for Irene to help us out immediately."
