The Stony Brook football team officially closed the 2014 season at the Grant Family Banquet held at the Student Activities Center on campus Sunday afternoon. Head coach Chuck Priore spoke about the season and handed out the team's awards.
The Ernest Owusu Offensive MVP went to sophomore Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), who became the seventh different player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, finishing with 1,070. He ran for more than 100 yards in six of 11 games and had a six-game streak with a rushing touchdown.
Senior Christian Ricard (Spencer, Mass.) captured the team's Defensive MVP award. Ricard recorded career-highs in tackles (92), tackles for loss (21.0) and sacks (9.0). His 21.0 tackles for loss are a school single-season record. Ricard was a key cog in Stony Brook's suffocating defense, which finished the regular season ranked fourth in scoring defense (15.5 ppg). An Academic All-District selection, Ricard made 242 total tackles, which ranks fourth all-time in school history.
Senior Luke Allen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) garnered Ray Downey Special Teams MVP. Allen enjoyed an outstanding senior season as Stony Brook's punter, finishing with a career-best 40.0 yards per punt. He led CAA Football with 29 punts inside the 20 and accounted for 10 punts of 50 yards or more. Allen recorded four punts inside the 20 against Bryant and Connecticut and bombed a career-long 72-yard punt at Elon.
The Offensive Rookie of the Year went to freshman Donavin Washington (Glendora, Calif.), who finished third on team in receptions (29) and receiving yards (332). Washington posted career-highs of 11 catches and 102 yards at New Hampshire. His 48-yard reception helped set up a touchdown at Albany.
Redshirt freshman Marvin Hart (Minneola, Fla.) earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. Hart made five starts in the secondary, accounting for 21 tackles and two interceptions, both of which came in a win at Elon. He led the team with seven pass breakups and ranked second in CAA Football and 37th nationally in kick return yards per game (23.1).
Senior Davonte Anderson (Corona, Calif.) won the Fred Kemp Award, given to the upperclassman who is dedicated to excellence on and off the field, while leading the team with pride and intensity.
The Mark Motroni Award, which goes to the upperclassman who demonstrates great pride in the Stony Brook football program and consistently exhibits unselfish dedication to the team, was awarded to senior Mike Lisi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) for a second straight season.
For the second straight season, senior Cody Precht (Centerport, N.Y.) received the Frank Conti Work Horse Award and senior Max Martinez (Wichita, Kan.) earned the Academic Achievement Award.
