Live Stats | Live Video Fairfield, Conn. - The Stony Brook women’s soccer team (2-4-0) will return to the pitch after a week hiatus when it heads to Fairfield (5-1-1) to take on the Stags on Sunday, Sep. 14 at 2 p.m.
Scouting Fairfield The Stags have ridden a stingy defense to a 5-1-1 record to open the season. In seven contests, they have posted three shutouts, allowed just four goals and have held opponents to an average of 11.1 shots per game. Offensively, they are led by 2014 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Ashley Small, who has scored three goals and added an assist for a total of seven points. She netted 13 goals as a junior. Fairfield has proven that they have other talented players that will make opposing teams pay if too much attention is given to Small. Brenna Brown, Cassidy Boegel and Anna Borea have all scored two goals this season. The team’s success comes as no surprise to the MAAC coaches, who voted them second in the preseason poll after they reached the MAAC championship game a year ago.
Last Meeting Stony Brook defeated Fairfield 2-0 when the two squads met last season. Currents senior
Shannon Grogan scored a goal in the game as did
Stella Norman. The #Seawolves are 3-4-1 all-time against the Stags but have won the last two meetings.
The All Important First Goal Dating back to the start of the 2013 season, the #Seawolves are 11-4-2 when scoring the first goal and just 2-6 when conceding the first goal. They scored the first goal in their wins over Delaware State and Seton Hall but are 0-3 when getting scored on first. The only time in six games when the first goal didn’t foreshadow the outcome this season was when
Raven Edwards (West Orange, New Jersey) opened the scoring against Siena, a game which the Seawolves lost 3-2. The last time the Seawolves came back to win after giving up the game’s first goal was on Oct. 24 of last season when they defeated New Hampshire 3-1.
