Doherty shines in 1-1 tie at Binghamton

Oct. 15, 2015

Vestal, N.Y. - Junior goalkeeper Emily Doherty (Oceanside, N.Y.) brought her A-game in a match that saw 47 combined shots between the two teams, posting a career-high 17 saves to help the Stony Brook women's soccer team (5-7-3, 2-2-1 AE) earn a point at Binghamton (1-11-2, 0-4-1 AE) in a 1-1 draw.

Ryan's Reaction

"This was another tough conference game for us," said head coach Sue Ryan. "We came back to tie the game in the second half, but missed too many good chances. We have to be sharper in the final third of the field."

Highlights

  • Valerie McNamara put the Bearcats in front 1-0 in the 39th minute, side-footing a shot from the top of the box into the top corner of the goal.
  • Redshirt junior Raven Edwards (West Orange, N.J.) tied the game at 1-1 in the 68th minute, getting inside position on her defender to head home a Hannah Groth (Cedarburg, Wis.) free kick that bounced inside the penalty area.
Notes
  • Stony Brook outshot Binghamton 24-23, but the Bearcats held an 18-8 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Doherty's 17 saves were the most by a Stony Brook goalkeeper in the last 16 seasons and nearly doubled her previous career-high of nine, set vs. Albany on October 8.
  • Senior Tessa Devereaux (Fayetteville, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with five shots, while Edwards had a team-best three shots on goal.
  • Edwards' goal was her eighth in the last eight games. She has four goals in five conference matches.
  • With the tie, the Seawolves broke a streak of five straight road losses.
