Orono, Maine - The Stony Brook women’s soccer team (6-7-3, 3-2-1 AE) heads North to take on the Maine Black Bears (8-6-1, 3-2-1 AE) in a pivotal matchup between teams tied in the standings.
Scouting Maine
The Black Bears suffered their second conference defeat of the season on Sunday at the hands of Binghamton. It will be a difficult trip for the Seawolves as Maine is 6-1 at home. Charlene Achille leads the Black Bears in scoring with five goals and two assists. Anetra Byfield is second on the team with four goals, while Vivien Bell is second in points with three goals and four assists. Goalkeeper Claudia Dube-Tempe is second in the conference with five shutouts.
Series History
The Seawolves are 12-10 all-time vs. the Black Bears, but lost last year’s meeting at LaValle Stadium 1-0.
Doherty Player of the Week
Junior goalkeeper Emily Doherty (Oceanside, N.Y.) was named the America East Player of the Week after stopping 20 of the 21 shots she faced in Stony Brook’s two games last week. Doherty made 17 saves, the most by a Stony Brook goalkeeper in 17 years, to help the Seawolves record a road point at Binghamton. She followed up her career performance with a three-save shutout of UMass Lowell in Stony Brook’s 1-0 victory on Sunday. She ranks second in the America East in goals against average (1.03), save pct. (.855), and saves per game (5.0).
Dangerous Devereaux
Senior Tessa Devereaux’s (Fayetteville, N.Y.) move to the left flank has paid dividends for the Seawolves. Since she assumed her new role on the left, the Seawolves have gone 3-0-1 and Devereaux has recorded a goal and an assist. She assisted on the only goal Sunday in Stony Brook’s 1-0 win over UMass Lowell, moving into solo fourth on the school’s all-time assist list, and is one assist shy of tying Beth Arikian for the school’s Division I assist record.
