Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Seawolves (4-8) received key contributions late in the game from their freshmen as they downed Fordham 6-5 at Houlihan Park on Wednesday.Freshman Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) broke a 5-5 tie with an rbi single in the seventh inning and freshmen Kevin Kernan (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Teddy Rodliff (Quincy, Mass.) gave up just one run over the game's final six innings to help the Seawolves win the season series over Fordham.
Senk's Reaction
"I am extremely pleased to get the win in such a close, hard-fought game," said head coach Matt Senk. "Full credit goes to Fordham for coming back from two three-run deficits to tie the game, but due to excellent pitching from Kernan and Rodliff, we were able to pull out the rubber match. It's a good win to take us into the conference season as we open with Binghamton this weekend."
Turning Point
The Seawolves and Rams were deadlocked at 5-5 heading into the seventh inning. With one out, sophomore Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) was hit by a pitch. He moved up a base a batter later on a single from senior Robert Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.). After senior Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) flew out, Gazzola stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit, a single to right field.
Notes
- Junior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) belted the second home run of his career and the first of his season in the second inning. The two-run shot was the second Stony Brook home run of the year. Junior Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) hit a three-run home run at Florida.
- Chavarria was the only Stony Brook player to record multiple hits, going 2-for 4 with a walk. Handley and Parenty each had a hit and walk, scoring two runs each.
- The freshmen duo of Kernan and Rodliff has helped stabilize the backend of the Seawolves bullpen. The two have combined to throw 15.2 innings this season, giving up just two earned runs between each other.
- Kernan notched the win, the first of his career, while Rodliff was credited with the second save of his career.
- Gazzola's last three hits have all been run-producing singles.
