Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Seawolves opened conference play Sunday with a pair of victories over Binghamton. Stony Brook received a gem from game one starter Tyler Honahan (Parker, Colo.) en route to an 8-3 victory. They followed it up with a 6-3 win in game two thanks to a three-run fifth inning, which broke a 3-3 tie.
Senk's Reaction
"It's a great start to the conference season," said head coach Matt Senk. "It begins and ends with pitching and that was the story of this doubleheader. Tyler Honahan went out in the first game and set the tone and then Kevin Kernan came into the second game in a tough spot and got us out of that bases-loaded jam. We look forward to the chance to sweep an always-tough Binghamton team tomorrow."
Game One
Honahan was the story of the first game, holding Binghamton to no runs on just three hits over seven innings. The Seawolves were deadlocked 0-0 when junior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) lined a two-run single to left in the fifth inning to break the tie. After a sac fly from junior Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) scored a run in the sixth, the Seawolves exploded for four runs in the seventh on three Bearcat errors and a key hit from senior Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario).
Game Two
The freshmen tandem of Andrew Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) and Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined to go 5-for-6 with four rbi and two runs scored in game two, helping Stony Brook squeak out a 6-3 win. The Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Stony Brook went ahead with three runs in the second thanks to back-to-back triples from Honeyman and sophomore Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.). Binghamton scored runs in the 4th and 5th innings off redshirt sophomore starting pitcher Dan Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) to even the game at 3-3, but Stony Brook responded with a three-run bottom of the fifth. Peragine gave Stony Brook the lead with a bases-loaded walk and Gazzola upped the lead to 6-3 with a two-run single to left.
Stony Brook ran into trouble in the top of the 6th when the first three Bearcat batters reached base. Senk turned to freshman Kevin Kernan (Mahopac, N.Y.) who induced a 1-2-3 double play and fly out to right to escape the threat with SBU maintaining a 6-3 lead. He then finished the deal with a scoreless seventh to move Stony Brook to 2-0 in conference play.
Notes
- Honahan has held opposing teams to a run or less in three of his five starts this season, lowering his era to 2.73 after today's outing.
- Gazzola reached base in six of his seven at-bats. He had two walks to go along with four hits.
- With two errorless games by the Stony Brook defense on Sunday, the Seawolves have now put together three games in a row without committting an error and have only made one error in its last five contests.
- Giles was 2-for-4 with three walks.
- The patient Seawolves drew 12 walks in the doubleheader. Five different players recorded at least two walks on the day.
