Seawolves split Monday's DH to earn series win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Clutch hitting and another solid pitching performance in game one led the Stony Brook baseball team (10-11, 4-2) to a split of Monday's double header and a series win over visiting UMass Lowell (5-12, 1-2) at Joe Nathan Field in America East Conference action.

Senior Rob Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.) delivered a two-out, two-run walk off single to center field that scored senior Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) and freshman pinch runner Billy McLean (East Williston, N.Y.) in the seventh in to give the Seawolves the 2-1 victory in game one.

Sophomore LHP Daniel Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) tossed Stony Brook's first complete game of the season to earn his third win. Zamora allowed one run on four hits, while striking out nine in seven innings of work.

UMass Lowell picked up a 6-3 win in the second game of the double header despite eight walks by the River Hawks pitching staff.

"It was good to get another series win. I'm disappointed in not picking up the sweep, but overall it was a really good weekend for us."

Turning Point (Game 1)

Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Stony Brook rallied with a single from freshman Bobby Honeyman (Massapequa, N.Y.), a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif.), a walk of senior Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) and another walk of junior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) and the two-out single by senior Rob Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.) that plated the tying and winning run.

Turning Point (Game 2)

UMass Lowell turned four double players in the game the helped erase the eight walks issued by the River Hawks pitching staff.

&middot; Stony Brook took the weekend series from UMass Lowell, 2-1.

&middot; Sophomore LHP Daniel Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) improved to 3-2 this season with Stony Brook's first complete game of the year. He pitched seven complete, allowing one run on four hits and struck out nine.

&middot; Junior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) went 3-5 with three walks during the double header on Monday. He is now hitting a team-high .358 for the season.

Up Next

Stony Brook will travel to face the Red Foxes of Marist on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before heading to Orono, Maine, for a three-game conference series this Friday and Saturday.
