March 30, 2015

Live Stats: Columbia Game One | Columbia Game Two | Rutgers Game One | Rutgers Game Two

Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team (9-8) will host a pair of midweek doubleheaders vs. Columbia (4-15) and Rutgers (14-9). The Seawolves take on the Lions Tuesday, Mar. 31 starting at 2 p.m., followed by the doubleheader with the Scarlet Knights on Wednesday, Apr. 1 at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Lions

The Lions, currently 4-15, have fell victim to some close defeats; five of their fifteen losses have come by a single run. Offensively, they have been shutout six times and only are averaging 2.58 runs per game. Twenty-one of their 49 runs have come in two games and they are batting .206 as a team for the season. Kerry Cook is the team's top hitter with 20 hits and a .351 batting average. Tonia Wu is just 2-6 in the circle, but she does sport a 2.74 era and has tossed four complete games.

Scouting the Scarlet Knights

Rutgers is off to a strong start to its 2015 season. They have won 14 games and opened Big Ten play with series victories over Indiana and Purdue. They have six starters batting over .300, own a team batting average of .309 and average 5.91 runs/game. Jordan Whitley leads the team with 31 hits and a .408 batting average. Jackie Bates ranks second in the Big Ten with an .833 slugging pct., hitting .385 with a team-high seven home runs and three triples. Alyssa Landrith has been the team's best pitcher with an 8-5 record, 3.36 era and two complete game shutouts.

Green Monster

Outfielder Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) is on pace for a record-setting season senior season. She currently leads the America East in hitting (.426), slugging pct. (.944), home runs (7), rbi (18) and total bases (51) and has already been named the America East Player of the Week once this season, for the fourth time in her career.

Deep Lineup

The Seawolves have four starters hitting over .340 entering the week. Green leads the way with a .426 average, followed by senior Shayla Giosia (.382), junior Alexandra Pisciotta (.346) and freshman Chelsea Evans (.345). To put this in comparison, only 11 players in the entire conference are batting above the .340 clip.

Tough Out

Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) has established herself as one of the toughest hitters in the nation to strikeout. To date, she has struck out just once in 55 at-bats, making her the 13th hardest hitter to strike out in the country. Even more impressive is her ability to combine contact with power. She is tied for second in the America East in home runs with five and owns the third best slugging pct. in the conference (.764).

Pisciottta Peppering the Ball

Nobody in the Seawolves lineup is hotter right now than Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.). She has recorded a hit in her last 11 ball games and is batting .421 over the stretch. She continued her torrid pace with three hits in six at-bats in Stony Brook's doubleheader vs. Central Connecticut State on Wednesday.

Cardiac Kids

The Seawolves have shown a propensity for the dramatic this season. Five of their nine wins have come in Stony Brook's last at-bats and 10 of their 17 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Seawolves own a 7-3 record in such games. Evans (Merced, Calif.) was the latest to provide the dramatics, delivering a walkoff double in Stony Brook's last outing vs. CCSU.

Slaughtering Seawolves

Stony Brook's offense leads the America East with 21 home runs; eight different players have registered a home run. They rank t-26th in the NCAA with an average of 1.24 home runs/game.
