Seawolves drop two close games to Rutgers

April 1, 2015

Final Stats

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) hit her league-leading eighth and ninth home runs of the year in the game one and junior Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) held Rutgers to just one run in game two, but the Stony Brook softball team dropped both games of the doubleheader to Rutgers, 7-5 and 1-0, respectively.

Bryant's Reaction

"Rutgers is a good team, the best all-around team we have played in a while" said head coach Megan Bryant. "We had our chances in both games. The first game was a slugfest and the second was an old-fashioned pitchers' duel. Hopefully, we learn from this and move on."

Game One

The Seawolves and Scarlet Knights combined for six home runs in game one. Green and freshman Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) matched a pair of Jackie Bates home runs to bring the teams square at 2-2 through four innings. The Seawolves took the lead on an rbi sac fly from Green in the bottom of the fifth, but it was short-lived as a three-run sixth inning and two-run seventh propelled the Scarlet Knights. Green's two-run home run in the seventh pulled the hosts to within 7-5. Junior Melissa Phelan (Saddle Brook, N.J.) reached base with two outs to bring senior Lauren Kamachi (Surrey Heights, British Columbia) to the plate representing the tying-run, but she lined out sharply to left to end the game.

Game Two

Sallen and opposing pitcher, Shayla Sweeney, made sure game two didn't have near the same offensive fireworks as the first. Both pitchers posted zeros in their first five frames before Rutgers crossed the plate for the game's first and only run in the sixth on two hits and an rbi ground out. Junior Kim Ragazzo (Lawrence, N.J.) reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the seventh but never reached scoring position as the next three hitters went down in order.

Notes

  • Junior Allie Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) collected hits in both games to extend her current hit streak to 14 games.
  • Green's two homers in game one represented her second multi-home run game of the season. She accomplished the same feat against Morgan State on Mar. 15. Her second blast tied Marissa Fleury for third all-time on the Stony Brook career home runs list.
  • Stony Brook's consecutive games with a home run streak ended at 10 games after they were shutout in game two.
