STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- History was made at Joe Nathan Field on Wednesday afternoon as the Stony Brook baseball head coach Matt Senk picked up his 700th career victory in the Seawolves 6-4 win over visiting LIU Brooklyn.
The win was highlighted by another solid day on the mound for the Stony Brook (17-11) pitching staff. The group of five Seawolves that threw allowed four runs on just four hits, while striking out nine LIU Brooklyn (11-20) batters.
Junior LF Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.), junior 3B Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) and freshman 3B/1B Andruw Gazzola (Coram, N.Y.) each collected two hits at the plate. Gazzola had a two-run triple in the third inning and sophomore CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) had a two-run double in the sixth inning.
Quoting Head Coach Matt Senk
"It was a hard fought game. Our guys hung in there and played hard and continued to play well overall. It was a really good mid-week win of us."
"To get 700 is something that I'm extremely proud of, but the biggest reason I'm so proud is because for that to happen you have to have unbelievable backing from a university and we have that here. Our university administration, our athletic administration, all the assistant coaches that have worked with me and the hundreds and hundreds of players that have played for me makes this milestone a we thing and not a me thing. It is about all of those people and not just myself."
Turning Point
With the score tied at 3-3, LIU Brooklyn loaded the bases in the fifth inning and Stony Brook freshman Aaron Pinto (West Covina, Calif.) pitched his way out of the jam and held the Blackbirds scoreless that inning. The Seawolves then bounced back after LIU Brooklyn plated one run in the top of the sixth on a home run, to score a pair of runs on a double down the left field line by sophomore CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) to take the lead for good.
