Seawolves fall in extra innings, 7-6

April 23, 2015

Final Stats

South Orange, N.J. - The Stony Brook softball team (23-14) staged a dramatic seventh inning rally to take a brief 6-5 lead before falling to the  Seton Hall Pirates (20-24) 6-5 in extra innings.

Bryant's Reaction

"We didn't get off to the best start, but to our credit we battled back and got some huge hits," said head coach Megan Bryant. "Chelsea had a great day at the plate and Bria and Shayla came up with big home runs. We just need to find a way to close these games out."

Turning Point

The Seawolves trailed 5-1 through five innings, but scored two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh. Trailing 5-3 with one out in the seventh, senior Bria Green (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) launched a towering two-run home run to tie the game. The blast was her 17th of the season, tying the single season school record. Senior Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) gave Stony Brook the lead on the next pitch, lining a ball over the left field fence for her 10th home run of the season.

The Pirates evened the score in the seventh inning after two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases. A one-out single plated the tying-run but senior Allie Cukrov got a strikeout and pop out to send the game to extra innings. That is where the Pirates won it with an rbi double.

Notes

  • Green's record home run tied the mark set by Hayley Durham in 2005.
  • Green and Giosia hit back to back home runs for the second time this season.
  • Stony Brook has hit 47 home runs this season, tying the school record set in 2005 and 2006.
  • Freshman Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run.
  • Giosia had two hits, two runs scored and an rbi.

The Seawolves are off this weekend and will return to the diamond on Tuesday for a pivotal America East doubleheader at Albany in a rematch of last year's championship game.
