STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The Stony Brook baseball team (13-11, 6-2) struck early and often on Wednesday afternoon in the 10-3 win over visiting Manhattan (8-19) at Joe Nathan Field. The Seawolves scored two runs in the first, three runs in the second and added runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings, combined with a solid start by freshman Nicholas DiEva (Cherry Hills, N.J.) on the mound.

DiEva did not allow a hit, while striking out three, to improve to 2-1 this season. Junior LF Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y.) led the offense with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run triple in the second inning. Sophomore CF Toby Handley (Whitby, Ontario) also collected two hits and scored three times, while junior RF Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) had a pair of hits to extend his streak to 10 straight games.

Quoting head coach Matt Senk

"We are always talking about taking advantage of the other teams mistakes. It was clearly tough for their guy, but we took advantage of it and got ourselves out to a really substantial lead right off the bat."

Turning Point

Stony Brook scored five unearned runs in the first two innings of the game after a pair of Manhattan errors. Junior RF Johnny Caputo (Toronto, Ontario) doubled after the first inning error to drive home senior 2B Rob Chavarria (Garden Grove, Calif.) for the second unearned run of the inning. In the second inning, junior LF Jack Parenty's (Wantagh, N.Y.) triple to center field drove in a pair of unearned runs following the Jaspers second error.
