Final Stats
Stony Brook, N.Y. - For the second consecutive season, the Stony Brook softball team (27-15, 13-2 AE) is the America East regular-season champion and will host the America East Tournament. The Seawolves clinched the top seed on Friday with two wins over UMBC by scores of 4-0 and 9-0, respectively.
Bryant's Reaction
"We played well and had great energy today," said head coach Megan Bryant. "I am proud of our team's fight and focus in both games. Our pitching and defense were excellent and our situational hitting was exceptional."
Game One
Senior Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.) was nearly unhittable in the Seawolves title-clinching victory in game one. She nearly tied the school record with her third no-hitter of her career, but it was broken up in the seventh with a one-out single. The Retrievers managed to load the bases in the final inning, but Cukrov got the final two outs to earn her sixth shutout of the season.
Junior Alexandra Pisciotta (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and freshman Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif.) led the offense with two hits. Senior Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a beautifully executed squeeze bunt to score Evans from third. Junior Melissa Phelan (Saddle Brook, N.J.) made the score 2-0 in the sixth with her fourth homer of the year and second in as many days. Pisciotta also added an rbi double in the sixth frame.
Game Two
The Seawolves jumped out to a 9-0 lead through three innings and never looked back behind the pitching of junior Jane Sallen (Lake Worth, Fla.) to win game two, 9-0. Giosia and Phelan provided the offensive fireworks with home runs. Giosia hit her 11th of the season in the first inning to give Stony Brook a 2-0 lead, then Phelan added a three-run home run in the second inning. Pisciotta, Giosia, sophomore Lexie Shue (Lakewood, Calif.), junior Kellie Reynolds (Paso Robles, Calif.) and senior Lauren Kamachi (Surrey, British Columbia) all recorded two hits. Phelan led the way with four rbi.
