Giosia, Evans win America East weekly awards

May 4, 2015

Boston, Mass. - Senior Shayla Giosia (Runnemede, N.J.) has been named the America East Player of the Week after driving in 14 runs in six games last week, including a career-high eight against UMBC in Stony Brook's regular-season finale. Freshman Chelsea Evans (Merced, Calif) joined Giosia on the weekly podium, earning her first Rookie of the Week of her career.

Giosia went 13-for-23 with two home runs and the 14 rbi's last week, helping the Seawolves to a 5-1 record and 5-0 record in conference play. Celebrating her senior day, Giosia went 4-for-4 with 8 rbi in the final game vs. UMBC, including a three-run homer in the first inning. The monster game moved her just one rbi shy of the career rbi record set by Hayley Durham. It is her first Player of the Week of the season and the second of her career.

Evans reached base in five of the six games, finishing the week with a .636 on-base percentage. Much of Giosia's success was predicated on Evans' ability to get on base. She finished the week 6-for-14 with eight runs scored.

The Seawovels clincehd the America East regular-season championship and will host the conference tournament from May 7-9. They open play on Thursday at 1 p.m. with a meeting vs. Maine.
