Stony Brook nabs victory over No. 13 UNH

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - History was made at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Saturday night as the Stony Brook football team earned a 31-6 victory over 13th-ranked New Hampshire in the CAA Football opener.

The win marked the first for the Seawolves (2-0, 1-0 CAA Football) over the Wildcats (1-2, 0-1 CAA Football) and UNH was the highest ranked opponent SBU has ever defeated.

Junior RB Stacey Bedell (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and sophomore WR Ray Bolden (Euless, Texas) led the offense, while senior DL Victor Ochi (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was the catalyst on the defensive side of the ball. Bedell rattled off 193 yards rushing on 21 carries, including two 50-plus yard runs in the second half and one touchdown. Bolden pulled down seven catches for 102 yards and two scores. Ochi collected a game-best 11 tackles, including 3.5 sacks.

Quoting the Seawolves
Head coach Chuck Priore
"I'm really proud of the program. The kids have worked hard and the biggest thing that I saw in yesterday's practice is that they expected to win. It wasn't that hope we win factor. The expectation was to win the game. They came and showed that when they took the field for four quarters."

"They (UNH) are a very good defensive team and we hung in there physically and made the plays in the passing game that we needed to make. We think he (Bolden) is a pretty special player and we can do things to feature him like we did tonight."

"This is a step that Stony Brook football needed to take. We've been in a lot of games, but the reality of it is that we have figured out how not to worry about losing and how to understand how to win and tonight was that explanation point."

WR Ray Bolden
"We were making big plays and leaving points on the board. I wouldn't say were where frustrated, but we knew that we needed to pick it up if we wanted to beat last year's conference champion."

RB Stacey Bedell
"We went into the half on that big play by Ray (Bolden) and that gave us momentum. We came out and used that momentum in the second half and we just played strong."

"I wasn't really looking at the numbers of this game. I just wanted to come out of this game with a win for my team. It is very important to start the conference off with a win."

DL Victor Ochi
"The biggest issue we had last year was finishing. All this off-season was dedicated to finishing so we knew the position we were in and the defense came out of the gates working. We all wanted to win and all have the same objective. I'm very proud of my boys."
